Lampert Cigars El Gringo Robusto

The wrapper is the first thing that gets you, a pale amber leaf with a faint sheen, the kind that makes you hold it up to the light before you even think about cutting it. Lampert calls this the Oro line and they are not wrong. Once it is lit the draw opens up clean and the first flavours are walnut and espresso, roasted and dry on the front of the palate, then a sweep of cinnamon that warms the middle. About a third of the way in, honey arrives and softens the whole profile, rounding what was angular without smothering it. The burn is even and the ash holds in thick, pale columns. For a robusto this stays lively all the way through, which is not always a given at this size. The espresso thread deepens into something closer to dark roasted coffee grounds in the final third, and the cinnamon sharpens again. No sudden bitterness, no drop-off. The finish is honey and warm walnut on the back of the throat. Smoked this one looking out over the bay and the pairing with a good whisky is obvious, the caramel in the glass mirrors exactly what is happening in the smoke. An hour well spent.

まず目に入るのはラッパーの色だ。淡いアンバー色の葉に微かな艶があり、カットする前についつい光にかざしてしまう。ランパートが「オロ（黄金）ライン」と名付けたのも納得できる。火を入れてドローを確かめると、吸い口はクリーンで、最初に来るのはウォルナットとエスプレッソ。ローストされた乾いた風味が舌の前側に広がり、続いてシナモンが中盤を温かく通り抜ける。3分の1ほど進んだあたりで蜂蜜のニュアンスが現れ、それまで少し角のあったプロファイルを柔らかくまとめる。燃焼は均一で、灰は太く白いまま長く保つ。 ロブストサイズでありながら最後まで風味の鮮度が落ちない。これはこのサイズでは珍しいことだ。最終三分の一ではエスプレッソがダークローストのコーヒーに近い深みへと変わり、シナモンも再び引き締まった印象を見せる。苦みの突き上げもなく、失速もない。フィニッシュは蜂蜜とウォルナットが喉の奥に温かく残る。湾を見渡しながら吸ったが、ウイスキーとの相性は言うまでもない。グラスのキャラメルが、煙の中に起きていることをそのまま映していた。
