Blind Man’s Bluff is Caldwell’s everyday line, the one priced to be smoked often. The Maduro arrived in 2019 as the third blend in the family and it is the odd one out in the best way: the Habano and Connecticut versions are rolled in Honduras, but for this one Caldwell went back to Tabacalera William Ventura in Santiago and built it around a Pennsylvania maduro wrapper, a Sumatra binder and Dominican fillers. American broadleaf over Dominican guts is not a common combination, and that is exactly why it tastes like nothing else in the humidor.

This is a maduro that tastes like one. Bold, really dark, and toasty from the first puff, bread straight out of the toaster, and the retrohale is my multigrain toast in the morning, grain and crust and a little butter on top. Behind the toast there is a floral note I did not expect and a sweet sap, close to maple, that builds through the middle, then cream and roasted nuts carry the finish. A few ticks stronger than medium, and the robusto gives you fifty minutes of it. Shipped nationwide across Japan from RACC.
