Five sweet cigars for the season of the moon.

Tsukimi is one of the good ones. Late September, the moon comes up full and enormous, and the whole country looks up at it. Dango on a tray, susuki grass in a jar, something sweet on the plate. That is all it asks.

Where I live there is a second part to it, and this one is small — a few neighbourhoods in this corner of the country and almost nowhere else. 月見泥棒. Moon-viewing thief. Sweets are set out at the front of the house that night, and the children come and take them. The plate is put there in order to empty. My son and I walk the dark streets for a couple of hours every year and he comes home leaning sideways under the weight of the bag. This pack is my homage to that.

The cigars themselves are chosen for the month rather than the custom.

September in Japan is hot and it rains. Nobody gets a clean three-hour window, so two of these are small on purpose — the ones you light when the sky gives you forty minutes and no more.

The rest is sugar. Every cigar here is a sweet cigar, and they are sweet in five completely different ways: maple, brown sugar, butter, black cherry, honey. Sweet smoke sits well against sweet food and against tea, which is what is already on the table this month.
