Robert Caldwell built this cigar around a leaf almost nobody uses as a wrapper. Dominican Negrito is a small, dark, stubborn varietal, and Caldwell has said openly that it does not play well with others. It took months of blending at Tabacalera William Ventura in Santiago before the right Corojo and Cuban seed fillers were found to sit under it. The King is Dead was launched in 2014 as one half of a pair with Long Live the King, two cigars written to be smoked back to back.

Hold the foot to your nose before you light it. It smells like raw honey. Lit, the first thing I get is grain, a bowl of All Bran kind of grain, with a French roast coffee right behind it, dark and clean. Then a floral lift and a smoky edge on the retrohale that keeps the whole thing from being soft. There is a sweetness running through it that I still cannot name, somewhere between milk chocolate and maple, and I have smoked enough of them trying. The last third brings toasted peanut and a stronger coffee without ever getting rough. Medium strength and remarkably balanced. Shipped nationwide across Japan from RACC.
